Mamma Mia! The Arena Spectacular Live!

AN ARENA SPECTACULAR NOT TO BE MISSED!

Mamma Mia Postponed

Friday 17th April 2020

The first global arena production of Mamma Mia, set to open on 8 October 2020 at the More FM Arena has been postponed, producers Taieri Musical announced today.

“After significant consultation with our key stakeholders and given such uncertainty in the current climate, we feel the best decision for all is to postpone our production until 2021”, Taieri Musical Society President Blair Hughson said.

Producers spent eleven months negotiating with Australasian right holders Music Theatre International to gain permission to present the show in a global first arena format.

Director Doug Kamo said he along with the creative team and cast were disappointed they wouldn’t be able to present the production this year but fully supported the decision. “Moving it into 2021 gives us the best chance of presenting this global first at a world class level and to an arena full of patrons”.

“We understand there will be a lot of disappointment with this announcement, however we are committed to bringing Mamma Mia to Dunedin and look forward to seeing our sponsors and patrons back in October 2021”, Hughson says.

2020 marks the 21st anniversary of the original West End production which opened on 6 April 1999 at the Prince Edward Theatre in London. It has become a global entertainment phenomenon, which has now been seen by over 60 million people worldwide, in over 440 major cities.

Ticket holders will be emailed initially with the process and options around refunds.

CASTING CALL FOR GLOBAL FIRST

Monday 17th February 2020

After securing the global first arena staging of the hit musical MAMMA MIA, director Doug Kamo says they are casting the net far and wide to secure the very best actors, singers and dancers to bring ABBA’s hit musical to life.

“This is a significant opportunity for any budding performer so we’re encouraging anyone who is considering auditioning to do just that”, Kamo says.

“We’re doing something that no other producer globally has been allowed to do and that is, take one of the world’s most successful party musicals, stage it as an epic new arena production and give our performers and audience members an experience they can’t currently get anywhere else in the world”.

Musical theatre in Dunedin is riding a wave of popularity with recent productions (Grease Arena Spectacular, Mary Poppins, Priscilla, WICKED) all enjoying record box office numbers.

“Our audience’s expectations have grown, the production values we are now delivering are of an international standard and the caliber of practitioners we are attracting is the highest I’ve seen in my time directing in Dunedin”’ Kamo says. “It’s exciting, I’m looking forward to seeing what the auditions bring”.

Mamma Mia has an onstage cast of 36 with an additional 12 backing vocalists who become an extension of the ensemble. “We are looking for singers who can move and dancers who can sing. Equally, the principal roles need to be strong across all performance disciplines” Kamo says.

The creative team is led by Kamo as director with Emma Holloway as choreographer, Kelly Hocking as Vocal Director and the OXO Cubans will be responsible for recreating the hit music of ABBA.  Jen Hughson returns as costume designer having been responsible for 2016’s, Grease - The Arena Spectacular Live.

2020 marks the 21st anniversary of the original West End production which opened on 6 April 1999 at the Prince Edward Theatre in London. It has become a global entertainment phenomenon, which has now been seen by over 60 million people worldwide, in over 440 major cities.

DUNEDIN SECURES NEW ZEALAND FIRST FOR HIT MUSICAL!

Wednesday 1st January 2020

Dunedin continues to attract international artists and blockbuster musicals with the announcement today that the global musical phenomenon MAMMA MIA! will be staged as an arena spectacular next year for the first time in New Zealand.

Producers have spent eleven months negotiating with Australasian right holders Music Theatre International to gain permission to present the show in the new arena format. “It has been a long process but one we are delighted to get across the line so Dunedin can once again experience a big arena production”, said Blair Hughson president of Taieri Musical and producers of MAMMA MIA!

“In 2016 we introduced Dunedin to the arena concept with Grease - The Arena Spectacular Live, held at the More FM Arena with over 12,000 audience members attending. Since then we have been looking for the right show to put back into the arena setting and MAMMA MIA! was chosen as the perfect fit”

The arena production will see audience members surround a stage that is set in the middle of the venue with a light and sound rig that resembles more of a rock concert than a theatre production. A significant multimedia component will transport audiences to the Greek islands where MAMMA MIA! is set with producers promising a truly spectacular three-dimensional theatrical experience.

The creative team is led by local producer and director Doug Kamo with Emma Holloway as choreographer and the OXO Cubans will be responsible for recreating the hit music of ABBA.

“Support for musical theatre in Dunedin is at an all-time high. Our audience’s expectations have grown, the production values have grown to an international standard and the caliber of practitioners we are attracting is the highest I’ve seen in my time directing in Dunedin”’ Kamo says. “Securing the arena rights to MAMMA MIA! is coup for Dunedin and New Zealand, we can’t underestimate the impact this will have”.

Hughson says he wants to make MAMMA MIA! accessible to as many people as possible by offering a wide range of ticketing options including a wedding guest package where audience members are seated at tables surrounding the stage and double as wedding guests at the reception.

2019 marked the 20th anniversary of the original West End production which opened on 6 April 1999 at the Prince Edward Theatre in London. It has become a global entertainment phenomenon, which has now been seen by over 60 million people worldwide, in over 440 major cities.

Featuring all the hits of ABBA including Honey Honey, Money Money Money, Thank You for The Music, Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, Super Trouper & Voulez-Vous the arena productions set design will be done by Kamo with costumes by Jen Hughson.

Mamma Mia will open on 7 October 2020 for a strictly limited season. Tickets on sale from mid-February 2020.
